About the Talk : "Open access is free immediate online availability of research articles and it comes along with the right to re-use. It is about making scientific research available to anyone and anywhere in the world, to read and access and build upon... so people can do interesting things, and work in new ways with the material. The idea is to make research material more valuable.

The history of the model is that publishing scientific manuscripts, especially ones with complexed, detailed, colored figures was expensive. So, if you wanted your article to be distributed widely, you sent it to commercial publishers and then they would manage the review process and communications with the reviewers and revisions and once it gets accepted and the they handled typesetting and printing and distribution of your scientific work... "
